Attendance

Reporting an Absence

Good attendance is an important part of success at Kimberley Sixth Form College. If a student is unable to attend college due to illness or another unexpected reason, it is the responsibility of the parent or carer to notify the college as soon as possible on the first day of absence.

Please report all absences by telephone:

01234 762 890, and then press ‘1’ for attendance.

If a student’s absence continues for more than one day, parents or carers should keep the college informed and provide updates as appropriate.

Requesting a Leave of Absence

If a student needs to be absent from college for a planned reason, a Leave of Absence Form must be completed and approved in advance wherever possible. Requests should ideally be submitted at least two weeks before the planned absence, or as early as possible.

Students can collect a Leave of Absence Form from the Attendance Office (1N22). The form must be completed and signed by:

  • The student
  • Their subject teachers
  • Their parent or carer

The completed form should then be returned to the Attendance Office for review. Final approval will be considered by a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Authorised and Unauthorised Absences

Not all absence requests can be approved. The college will consider each request individually and may require supporting evidence.

Examples of absences that would normally be unauthorised include:

  • Family holidays
  • Minor illnesses such as headaches or stomach aches
  • Driving lessons
  • Part-time work
  • Visiting family or friends
  • Birthdays and celebrations
  • Part-time job interviews

Examples of absences that would normally be authorised (evidence required) include:

  • Medical appointments that cannot be arranged outside timetabled lessons
  • Significant illness
  • University interviews
  • Apprenticeship interviews
  • Practical driving tests

Absences Considered at the College’s Discretion

The following requests may be authorised on a case-by-case basis by the Senior Leadership Team. Supporting evidence must be provided.

  • University open days
  • Work experience outside the college’s designated work experience period
  • Volunteering activities
  • Driving theory tests

Please note that submitting a Leave of Absence Form does not guarantee approval. Students should await confirmation before making any arrangements that could affect their attendance.
